The History of Bella Donna Oprah – The Original
A rose by any other name may smell as sweet, but few honours are as meaningful as having a rare and exceptional flower named in one’s tribute. In 2004, a truly remarkable cultivar of Clivia miniata was named in honour of Oprah Winfrey, celebrating both elegance and global influence.
This unique plant became known as Bella Donna Oprah, meaning “beautiful lady” in Italian—a name that perfectly reflects its refined beauty and presence.
Origins and Naming
Bella Donna Oprah was cultivated by Bertie Guillaume in Makhado (formerly Louis Trichardt), situated in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. The plant is native to regions of South Africa and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), areas renowned for producing some of the finest Clivia genetics.
The name Bella Donna Oprah was selected by a formal panel consisting of representatives from O, The Oprah Magazine and the Clivia Society, recognising the plant’s exceptional beauty, rarity, and horticultural significance.
A Rare and Coveted Cultivar
Today, Bella Donna Oprah remains one of the most sought-after Clivia cultivars in existence and is found in only a handful of elite breeders’ collections worldwide. Its rarity, combined with its remarkable breeding value, has ensured its enduring status as a cornerstone plant in serious Clivia breeding.
We are fortunate to hold one of the original offsets of this historic plant and have been actively breeding with it—and with its descendants—for several years. Only recently have we begun releasing limited quantities of seeds and seedlings from this exclusive line.
All plants derived from this lineage are distinguished by the “Bella” prefix, a direct reference to their heritage and the enduring elegance of the original plant.
Genetic Significance and Breeding Value
Bella Donna Oprah is genetically split for yellow, producing green-stemmed seedlings that mature into compact, yellow-flowering plants of exceptional quality.
These offspring are characterised by:
Compact plant habit
Strong, well-balanced growth
Large, full umbels
Impressive, oversized blooms
The consistency and quality of these traits make Bella Donna Oprah an invaluable breeding plant and a key contributor to the development of refined modern yellow Clivias.
Legacy
More than two decades after its naming, Bella Donna Oprah continues to shape modern Clivia breeding. Its influence lives on through carefully selected descendants that carry forward both its genetic strength and its legacy of elegance.
At Utopia Clivias, this plant represents not only a historic cultivar, but also an enduring source of inspiration and excellence within our breeding programme.
